UPDATE: Alleged crash assailant arrested, in jail


UPDATE (9 a.m., Sunday, August 11, 2024): Police Saturday arrested the man they accuse of driving a Triple J vehicle into the Autospot showroom. Bintenson Simina was arrested for injuring several people while driving under the influence of alcohol. He also was arrested for stealing a car. He was booked and confined at the Guam Department of Corrections. More information about the the incident will be revealed once the Superior Court of Guam releases the prosecutor’s magistrates report on the case. That report likely will not be available until Monday.

UPDATE: (7:45 a.m., Sunday, August 11, 2024): According to Autospot owner Derrick Muna Quinata, the woman seen face down in a viral video of the crash into his showroom Saturday evening has been stabilized by the hospital team attending to her. Mr. Muna Quinata, his mother, and his aunt spent the evening checking the condition of the crash victims and left the hospital this morning at 6. He thanks the public for your prayers for the victims of the crash.

Late Saturday night, Triple J Motors released a statement on the crash, which involved one of their employees and a vehicle marked with a Triple J plate. This is the full statement:

“We are deeply saddened by today’s tragic incident involving an off-duty employee. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured and their families. We are fully cooperating with authorities as they carry out their investigation.”

UPDATE (6:25 p.m., Saturday, August 10, 2024): Guam Fire Department has confirmed two additional people are being treated “for minor injuries/psychological trauma as a result of the incident.” This brings the casualty count to six people, four of whom reportedly are being hospitalized.

Guam Autospot also has released a statement:

“This evening a car traveling northbound on Marine Corps Drive crossed the center lane and crashed into our building injuring several individuals. At this time the matter is still under investigation by the Guam Police Department. First responders from GPD and Guam Fire Department responded and transported those injured. We thank them for the quick response and ask everyone to keep those injured and their families in your prayers as we keep them in ours. The driver of the vehicle is in GPD’s custody.”

In a tragedy reminiscent of Chad Desoto’s 2012 crash along a Pleasure Island sidewalk that left several people dead, a man drove a car into the Guam Autospot showroom in Hagatna early Saturday evening, leaving four people injured. The four Autospot patrons are in critical condition in the hospital, with one of them fighting for their life, according to the company’s owner.

“So far, there are four confirmed injuries ranging from moderate to serious,” Guam Fire Department spokesman Kevin Reilly confirmed to media at 5:37 p.m. “The scene is still developing and we will have more information as it becomes available.”

According to a source at the scene, an on-the-clock employee of Triple J Motors suspected of being inebriated drove a company car into the showroom. Police and medics are on the scene.
