Vandals early this morning caused more than $800 in damage to public property throughout Sinajana as they stole “Pride” flags, or flags celebrating gay rights.
Sinajana Mayor Robert Hoffman said his office is flying the flags along with the Philippine National Flag and a flag commemorating Juneteenth throughout June.
Only the Pride flags were stolen.
“I’m saddened and disappointed,” the mayor said, confirming that so far his staff has counted five of the publicly-owned flag poles were destroyed as vandals seized the Pride flags.
The vandalism occurred on poles along Chalan Kanton Tutujan and Pale Kieran Hickey Drive. The security footage shown here (the timestamp, according to Mr. Hoffman, is off by one hour and should instead show the theft occurred at 3:36 a.m.) is of one of the flag poles along Chalan Kanton Tutujan.
Mr. Hoffman said he will be reporting the vandalism and theft to the Guam Police Department as soon as he is finished with his appointments for the day. He asks that anyone with information about the crimes report the matter directly to GPD.
