Change to Guam forecast: Tropical storm conditions by 10 pm tonight

Use the remaining daylight today to remove loose debris from around your house, and make your final preparations (gas, canned foods, candles and batteries, etc.) now. Tropical Depression 14W is expected to become a tropical storm by tonight, which is a change from the forecast by the National Weather Service Guam office this morning.

Governor Lou Leon Guerrero declared Condition of Readiness 3 at 3 p.m. today “out of an abundance of caution,” but added this continues to be a non-typhoon event.

“I spoke with the superintendent and I recommended to him to close the schools tomorrow,” Ms. Leon Guerrero said, “and he is going to close schools tomorrow.”

The governor also has ordered the opening of a northern shelter, but is waiting for the education superintendent to identify which school will be used as the shelter.

“This is gonna be a tent-canopy-tarp-banana tree type situation,” NWS chief meteorologist Landon Aydlett said. “It’s going to be passing over Guam or very close to Guam overnight and into the morning.”

Tropical storm conditions will continue through tomorrow. The second part of the weather systems NWS has been watching will continue to bring rains through the week.

“This will not be a typhoon,” Mr. Aydlett emphasized. “This will not be like Typhoon Mawar.”
