Guam in COR3; Clear your yards now; Man-Yi heads to Guam Wednesday

Tropical Storm Man-Yi (as of 11:45 a.m., Tuesday, November 12, 2024) is heading toward southern Guam and is expected to bring to Guam and Rota heavy rainfall and winds that at times will feel like a typhoon. This is according to an analysis of the current forecast by National Weather Service Guam Office meteorologist Brandon Aydlett.

At this time, he said, there is a negligible chance the storm intensifies rapidly into a typhoon by the time it reaches the Marianas. However, there still is enough time for the storm to veer north, adding that even a 10-mile change in course could have a major impact on Tinian and Saipan. On its current track, Man-Yi is expected to spare Tinian and Saipan from tropical storm-force winds and rains.

Acting Governor Joshua Tenorio has placed the island in Condition of Readiness 3. COR 2 might be called at 6 p.m. This means there will be no classes for public schools Wednesday. Storm shelters also will be opened, with news of these openings forthcoming.

Flooding will be an issue with “very intense showers” that will not be persistent in Guam, but may bring four to eight inches of rain in a small amount of time.

The NWS Guam Office is waiting for the Joint Typhoon Warning Center’s 1 p.m. forecast track to see whether there has been any shift north.

As of now, the storm is expected to be strongest over Guam from midday Wednesday and through the afternoon. Heavy rains should start in Rota before dawn, and in Guam within a couple hours of sunrise.

All of these forecasts can change, so it is important to continue monitoring the news for information from NWS Guam.

Mr. Aydlett added that Guamanians should start clearing their yards of equipment, supplies, and debris that tropical storm force winds can pick up and throw.
