UPDATE: ESCAPEE CAUGHT


UPDATE: The following is a news release from the Guam Department of Corrections as of 11:34 am:

On April 20, 2022, at about 5:45 a. m Detainee KD, Arason checked into the Hagåtña Detention
Facility for processing as a new confinee. He refused to take the COVID test and as part of
quarantine measures, Detainee Arason was then transferred from the Hagåtña Detention Facility
to a quarantine unit in Mangilao.

At about 7:00 a.m., Detainee Arason was checked by a correctional officer and medical staff as
part of our COVID-19 precautions.

At about 8:24 a.m., GPD informed DepCor that a concerned individual reported a person was seen
on the outer perimeter possibly escaping. Officers made a check of our quarantine unit and
discovered that Detainee Arason was unaccounted for.

An institutional lockdown was initiated and our Special Operations Response Team (S.O.R.T.)
was deployed to search and apprehended the detainee. At about 9:00 a.m., Detainee Arason was
seen around American Medical Clinic (AMC) in Mangilao. At about 9:15 a.m., Detainee Arason
was apprehended and released to the custody of the Guam Police for further investigation.

DepCor’s Internal Affairs Unit is also investigating this incident.

This morning, April 20, 2022, sometime after 0800 a.m., detainee KD Arason, 22 years old, who was housed in our isolation/quartine facility (ISOFAC) in Mangilao escaped from the unit.  Law enforcement officers are currently searching the area around DOC.  More information will be released as it becomes available.
