GUAM: COR 1 to be declared: A special address by Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero

The governor:

Hafa Adai!

Since my last address, Mawar was upgraded from a Tropical Storm to a Typhoon.

Additionally, our partners at the National Weather Service issued a Typhoon Warning for Guam. Forecasts show Mawar is likely to pass through our region as a Category 3 typhoon. Mawar is a real threat and a possible direct hit to our island.

For this reason, I will be placing Guam in Condition of Readiness 1, effective Tuesday, May 23rd at 1 p.m. This means we will start experiencing damaging winds and rains within 12 hours.

I am very concerned and worried about your safety and I want you to take these warnings seriously.

If you haven’t already done so, take the preparedness steps for you and your families.

For your safety and for your protection, I ask you to stay home. For those who need it, emergency shelters are available.

I know it’s been quite some time since we’ve had a storm of this magnitude and it is frightening. I ask you to remain calm. Stay informed. And most importantly, be prepared.

As an island community, we have gone through many typhoons. And together, we have proven our resilience.

Please be safe.
