Impending storm tracking toward Guam and Rota, not looking like another Mawar

Weather experts predict a tropical disturbance is coming to the Marianas this week. The likelihood of it becoming as strong as a typhoon, however, is diminishing rapidly.

In an interview with Kandit Sunday (September 8, 2024) morning, National Weather Service chief meteorologist Landon Aydlett said Invest 95W continues to be disorganized, but heading into a period of organization, when experts agree it will (likely) become a tropical depression. Invest 95W remains over the waters of the Federated States of Micronesia hundreds of miles southeast of Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. According to Mr. Aydlett, global forecasters anticipate 95W becoming a tropical disturbance (the lowest form of which is called a tropical depression) more than 24 hours from early this morning.

One major change from yesterday’s information is that while the trajectory and the plume or “cone” of the impending storm’s path has not changed (it could pass anywhere from north of Yap to north of Saipan), data is suggesting the storm may be targeting the area from south of Guam to Rota.

The NWS chief also is advising political campaigns to consider taking down their signs before heavy rains begin Monday evening.

Watch our interview with Mr. Aydlett for more information and for his suggestions on your preparedness.
