Remembering the late Sen. Pilar Lujan

Former Sen. Pilar Lujan passed away this weekend. Below is a statement from Speaker Therese Terlaje on behalf of the 36th Guam Legislature:

“Our island mourns the loss of former Senator Pilar Lujan, who passed away at the age of 92.  Senator Lujan is rejoined with her late husband, Senator Frank G. Lujan, and daughter Justice Monessa Lujan. As a war survivor who testified on behalf of the people of Guam in front of the War Claims Commission, Senator Lujan shared her painful childhood stories of war-torn Guam, and the physical and emotional scars she endured through her life.

Senator Lujan exemplified how the greatest generation turned adversity into action, serving the people of Guam in different roles of government, most notably as a Senator from the 17th through the 22nd Guam Legislature.

During her many years of service, she championed education, justice and preservation of the CHamoru language, including the expansion of CHamoru language and culture programs within the Department of Education and anchoring a CHamoru news program on KGTF.  As one of her greatest accomplishments serving as Chairwoman of the Legislative Judiciary Committee in the 21st Guam Legislature, Senator Lujan led the passage of P.L. 21-147, which reestablished the Supreme Court of Guam.

As lawmakers and government officials, we can only aspire to accomplish as much as Senator Pilar Lujan achieved in her lifetime, as she embodied the standard of public service that is expected by the people of Guam.  Our condolences go out to her children Davina, Galen and Rolenda and their families,” stated Speaker Terlaje.
