Trade winds are here; that’s why the Mariana Islands have been cooler at night

Landon Aydlett

Landon Aydlett, meteorologist with the US National Weather Service Guam, confirmed the reason it’s been a bit cooler at night in the Mariana Islands is because trade winds have reached us. Here is his statement:

We are in the middle of the dry season, with march being the Mariana Islands’s climatologically driest month of the year. The current trade wind-dominant pattern will continue at least a couple more months before we begin the gradual transition into the wet season this summer.

A couple surface features will give us a better chance of showers this week to punctuate the drier, sunnier conditions with even a chance for thunderstorms later today.

Daytime temps will keep in the mid to upper 80s but with a cooling breeze, particularly when in the shade. Nighttime lows could dip into the mid 70s as we’ve seen the last several nights – great for open windows and saving on the AC use.

Considering we are in the middle of dry season – our fire danger continues a steady climb. Recent wet periods have helped to delay the onset of peak fire danger conditions , but recent strong winds have made conditions tricky for extinguishing any fires that are set or get away. These conditions will gradually worsen in the coming months until the more frequent wetting rains settle in, usually in June and July.
