Woman Returns to Her Island Home As Active Duty Sailor

Guam’s New Year’s baby born at Sagua Managu in 2006 returned this week to her island home to serve our country in the U.S. Navy here. She was born Kassie Fae Babauta Cadiz, then was raised by her mother Manuela and adoptive father Dan Mata, Jr. In 2008 the Matas relocated off island.

“She is very outgoing and always helping others,” her proud dad said. “Kassie has a strong support system.”

The 18-year-old graduated from high school this past May, enlisted in the Navy, graduated from training in October, then from A-School last month.

She returned to her island home Friday as an active duty U.S. Sailor.

Mr. Mata is retired from the Army. Kassie’s sister Bethanie is an Army soldier, and their brother RJ also is a sailor.

“We hope that our home will welcome Kassie back and continue to show her what family means to our island,” Mr. Mata said. “Our children stand proud and ready to serve our armed forces to protect our island and our country.”
