Zero-Down residents lost homes, no power, trickling water… but in good spirits

The government of Guam is taking a bit longer to get to the Zero Down subdivision in Yigo, one of the hardest hit places by Typhoon Mawar. It also is among the poorest communities on the island.

On Wednesday evening, Kandit toured the area and talked to some of the residents. Here are the takeaways:

• Several homes were destroyed or left in disrepair by the typhoon. Some of the residents do not qualify for federal assistance because of their citizenship.

• Some of the roads have been blocked by trees. Dededo residents Jon and Kay Savares cut down and moved the branches.

• Several residents said the mayor of Yigo has not once been to the area since the typhoon.

• There is debris everywhere

• Lt. Gov. Joshua Tenorio said he has visited the area several times since.

• The American Red Cross provides hot meals to the residents twice a day

• The Todu Guam Foundation has repeatedly visited for health checks

• Despite all their loss and the general absence of government assistance, the residents are not complaining, and count their blessings.
