The Palacios administration continues its crackdown on residents and businesses that have failed to pay taxes. Last week, the administration filed a lien in local and federal court against Laura and Hang Chieng Tan.
According to the lien, the Tans owe the Commonwealth government $285,903.76 in taxes for 2018 income.
Since coming to office in early 2023, Arnold Palacios has instructed the CNMI Department of Finance to recover taxes owed from companies, businesses, and comparatively wealthier residents as a spoke in the wheels of his fiscal recovery efforts. Interestingly, the majority of the tax liens are for taxes these companies, businesses, and residents allegedly failed to pay during the administration of his predecessor, Ralph Torres.
Among the prior filings was a lien on the assets of Mr. Torres’ brother, Vince Torres, his law firm, and another company he owns. According to those three tax liens, Mr. Torres and his companies owed the Commonwealth government nearly $1.6 million in taxes all owed during and built up during every year of his brother’s tenure as governor.
Kandit would have reached out to the governor’s office for comment, however it would have been an exercise in futility as the governor’s office rarely replies timely or at all to Kandit’s request for comment or information.
