A Friday 1 p.m. report from the National Weather Service states “confidence is increasing that a tropical cyclone of at least tropical storm strength will pass somewhere near or through the Marianas region around Tuesday or Wednesday next week. This is an evolving situation. Folks in the Marianas should watch weather conditions and forecast trends very closely through the weekend.”
The possible storm right now is Invest 98W, which according to NWS and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center is persisting in the Federated States of Micronesia.
“Invest 98W is currently centered just north-northwest of Pohnpei near 8N156E. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center has upgraded its potential for development into a tropical depression to ‘Medium,'” according to the latest NWS statement issued by chief meteorologist Landon Aydlett. “This means that significant development is likely, but beyond 24 hours. 98W will continue to develop in the coming days, likely remaining within Chuuk and Pohnpei states through Sunday, before heading west-northwest toward the Marianas.”
“Global models are in good agreement,” according to the latest bulletin from JTWC, that conditions will consolidate “over the next couple of days while it tracks generally west-northwestward.”
Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan are northwest of the system.
“Environmental analysis reveals that 98W is in a favorable environment for intensification,” the JTWC bulletin states.

“Confidence increasing?” about a potentially dangerous storm? That’s an odd choice of words. On a par with the 1500’s announcement, “Confidence increasing that the Black Plague will bring death in wholesale numbers. Rats are suspected.”
