GPA EXEC: “We are getting the grid repaired so you can have power.”


Guam Power Authority is reconnecting electricity to customers faster in the aftermath of Mawar than in Pongsona, when restoration took between two to six months.

Within days of the devastation of last week’s storm, more than 12 percent of customers are believed to have been restored to island power as of Sunday, with crews working 24 hours a day, some on triple shifts, to repair the grid.

“We are getting the grid repaired so you can have power,” said Tricee Limtiaco, GPA assistant general manager for administration.

Anxieties and tensions are growing among residents left in the dark (no pun intended) by a disaster recovery response that has produced far more questions and chaos than answers. It has been the visible presence of police and Guardsmen on the roads directing traffic and gas stations, Guam Waterworks Authority crews in the villages, telecomm companies repairing towers, and GPA crews on bucket trucks everywhere that has simmered tempers and provided some semblance of relief.
