In the Financial Services Committee reconciliation package “Build Back Better” initiative, language has successfully been included for a one-time increase in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to Guam from $3.1 to approximately $31mm.
CDBG funds are available for a variety of uses subject to grant approval, from supporting non-profit work, rehabilitating parks and restrooms, revitalizing commercial public assets, and more.
“These resources made available through our work in the Financial Services Committee represent a 10x increase in normal funding levels, and will be transformative in our community’s ability to respond to the needs of our people and fix so many public facilities that have been broken for decades,” said Congressman San Nicolas. “We can address flooding issues throughout the island, get our non-profits the facilities they need to reach at-risk communities, finally make our public restrooms at our beaches workable, get our community centers and sports facilities modernized, and more,” Congressman San Nicolas concludes.
CDBG funds are federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grants that are administered by the Guam Housing and Urban Renewal Authority (GHURA).
