I am most hopeful that a second Trump administration would recognize the Port of Guam’s critical role as both a strategic military hub and a gateway for regional commerce, ensuring the necessary federal investment to modernize and strengthen our infrastructure. The Port has consistently positioned itself to support national defense priorities while facilitating the flow of goods and services that sustain Guam’s economy, as well as the broader regional economy. With aging cranes, fuel facilities, and wharves requiring upgrades, federal support remains essential to enhance our resilience and capacity to meet the growing demands in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Department of Defense’s gap analysis on the Port of Guam highlighted critical areas requiring immediate attention, including infrastructure vulnerabilities that could limit the Port’s ability to support military mobilization and sustainment during contingencies. Addressing these gaps is essential to ensuring the Port can meet its dual mission of supporting both commercial throughput and military readiness. Without significant investment in modernization, these vulnerabilities risk undermining U.S. strategic objectives in the region. Projects such as crane replacement, wharf upgrades, and improved fuel storage facilities have already been identified as key priorities to address these gaps, ensuring operational resilience and readiness.

The Port handles the majority of cargo entering Guam, including essential goods like food, fuel, and construction materials, while also serving as a critical link in the military supply chain. From handling shipments for U.S. military operations to supporting disaster relief efforts across Micronesia, the Port’s contributions extend far beyond Guam’s shores. Its dual role reinforces the importance of modern, reliable infrastructure to sustain these operations effectively.

The Port has successfully advanced both its military and commercial narratives, thanks in part to the leadership of Governor Lou Leon Guerrero, Lt. Governor Josh Tenorio, and our board, as well as funding provided by the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation (OLDCC). This support allowed us to update our master plan and initiatives like the Port Readiness Plan. However, Guam faces challenges unique to its status as a U.S. territory—such as geographic isolation, resource limitations, and vulnerability to natural disasters—making federal investment even more critical. Any delay in addressing these needs could hinder the Port’s ability to fulfill its dual role, especially at a time when geopolitical tensions are escalating.

The Port of Guam is not just vital to Guam but to the Indo-Pacific region as a whole. Its efficiency benefits neighboring Pacific islands and strengthens the United States’ strategic position in the region. A bipartisan commitment to prioritizing the Port, informed by findings like the DoD gap analysis, is essential to maintaining progress and ensuring that Guam continues to serve as a resilient and reliable partner in national defense and economic growth.

Trump will support whatever makes economic sense and promotes growth and profitability (not long term and perpetual government largesse to a welfare state that refuses to get off it’s ass with it’s handout requests). Hopefully the new CNMI delegate to Washington will use some deep thinking and reflection when she constructs her “wish list” of federal funding for the CNMI under the Trump Administration. Here is a hint for her – propose cost saving measures and economic growth that makes sense (not some pipe dream or delusion that isn’t applicable to a remote island in the Pacific). I could give some hints if you want (I have studied this issue for quite some time). To the rest of you TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome) suffering fool’s – get over with it. You lost. We had to endure 4 years of your retarded rhetoric under dementia Joe and ‘Scamala Harris”, now it’s our turn. Time for you to put away your hyperbolic nonsense claims about Trump being a Hitler. Time for you to look in the mirror and look at your own failings in these ghetto islands full of corruption and graft.
