Load shedding possible again tonight on Guam

(GPA’s load shedding tentative schedule follows the news release)

The following is a March 8. 2023 news release from the Guam Power Authority:

Last night, GPA implemented brief outages from 6 pm to 9 pm. Two (2) of the island’s four (4) baseload power plants, Cabras 1 & 2 were offline reducing the total power generation capacity to 221 megawatts.

Cabras Units 1 & 2, 48-year-old plants, continue to be offline for repairs. Cabras Unit No. 1 is offline undergoing continued scheduled repairs. Cabras Unit No. 2 went offline Tuesday for emergency repairs to the boiler tubes. Repair work began late yesterday, after unit cooled sufficiently to allow safe entry by generation personnel. Cabras Unit No. 1 is expected to return to service mid-day on Thursday, March 9th, and be online Friday, March 10th.

Piti 9 remains on limited production due to high liner temperature on cylinder, and will likely be offline this weekend for repairs.

To alleviate impact and minimize load shedding, GPA has implemented its interruptible load program. “GPA is doing everything to meet the island’s power load including placing GWA assets on standby generators and working with large customers including Navy to isolate their facilities from the grid during peak time,” noted GPA General Manager, John M. Benavente, P.E.

Despite all efforts, if there is a shortage of generation capacity tonight, GPA will, as a last resort to maintain grid stability, implement rotating outages lasting up to 1-hour. Power will be reconnected to all affected customer at the top of each hour. “We ask for your patience and kindly request that all customers conserve power, especially during the peak demand hours from 6 pm to 10 pm”, added GM Benavente.

The load shedding schedule is posted on GPA’s website and social media pages including Instagram and Facebook. It should be noted that a load shedding schedule is provided to assist customers to plan in case an outage may occur but does not mean a power interruption is imminent.

We thank you for your continued patience.
