Ojeda loses freedom for the rest of his life

The man convicted of killing Anthony Mendiola in cold blood may never see life outside of prison again. Presiding Judge Alberto Lamorena III sentenced Nathan Ojeda to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murdering Mr. Mendiola on January 4 last year. He sentenced Mr. Ojeda to an additional 25 years for his use of a gun in the night-time killing along San Vicente Avenue in Agat.

“Presiding Judge Lamorena recognized that that a lesser sentence would depreciate the seriousness of Mr. Ojeda’s crime of shooting down the victim in cold blood,” a news release from the Office of the Attorney General of Guam states. Douglas Moylan, the attorney general, thanked Mr. Mendiola’s family and friends for their courage in testifying at the sentencing hearing.

According to the original charging document and testimony in the Ojeda trial, Mr. Ojeda approached Mr. Mendiola outside Mendiola’s Agat home and began shooting him. A friend of Mr. Mendiola then shot back at Mr. Ojeda, who drove off with a gunshot injury to his leg.

Mr. Ojeda told police that night, when he was apprehended, that he did not kill Mr. Mendiola, but that he was glad he was dead.

He took his case to trial, and on September 26 a jury convicted him of aggravated murder with a special allegation of use of a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony. It took the jury only half a work day to deliberate.

Mr. Moylan that day announced his intention to seek the maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Mr. Lamorena issued the sentence Friday.

“This sentence is another victory by this ‘toughest on crime’ AG’s office,” Mr. Moylan said in a news release. “This AG and our prosecution team is committed to protecting our community and fighting to imprison bad guys who would do us harm.”
