Skittles Gummies, Starburst Gummies, and Life Savers Gummies voluntary recall


The following is a news release from the Guam Department of Public Health and Social Services:

The Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) would like to inform the public of the voluntary recall initiated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of specific varieties of SKITTLES® Gummies, STARBURST® Gummies, and LIFE SAVERS® Gummies due to the potential presence of a very thin metal strand embedded in the gummies or loose in the bag.

Products were manufactured by a third party and distributed in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The products subject to this recall in the U.S. include SKITTLES® Gummies, STARBURST® Gummies, and LIFE SAVERS® Gummies, and are described in the table below. On the back of the package is a 10-digit manufacturing code; the first three digits in this code will indicate the implicated product as described in the table below:

The Division of Environmental Health (DEH), through recall effectiveness checks, has determined that the recalled items were distributed and sold on the island. To date, Super Happy Mart (SHM) in Barrigada has been confirmed to carry the affected LIFE SAVERS® Wild Berries Gummies Peg Pack 7.0 oz and LIFE SAVERS® Sour Gummies Peg Pack 7.0 oz, 180g recalled products. SHM has pulled remaining quantities of the affected products from the shelves. SHM has not received any calls of injuries or illnesses associated with the recalled products.

Cosmos Distributing Co., Ltd (CD) has also been identified as a distributor of the affected Mars Wrigley products to local retailers and are working with all their retailers to pull the remaining affected products from shelves. CD will discontinue the sale of the recalled items.

The FDA is continuing to investigate and will provide additional consumer safety information when it becomes available.

Manufacturer Mars Wrigley Confectionery US, LLC will work with retailers to remove recalled products from store shelves. If consumers believe they have purchased a recalled item, they should dispose of the product and not consume it.

To date, the DPHSS has not received any local report of injuries or illnesses associated with the use of these potentially affected products. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact their healthcare provider. Consumers who have purchased the items mentioned above are urged not to use the affected products. The (DEH) continues to conduct its recall effectiveness check activities and will continue to update the public as more information is obtained.
