Speaker Edmund Villagomez today wrote to Gov. Ralph Torres requesting that he, “consistent with Section 9 of Article II of the CNMI Constitution call for a Special Election” to fill the unexpired term previously filled by Congressman Ivan Blanco.
Mr. Blanco died suddenly on July 23, 2021 while attending a meeting in Saipan. He began his two-year term in the 22nd Commonwealth Legislature this past January.
“A vacancy in the legislature shall be filled by special election if one-half or more of the term remains,” states, in part, Section 9 of Article II of the CNMI Constitution.
