Man shot dead at Shell gas station

[10:10 p.m., March 9, 2022 update] Guam Police Department spokeswoman Officer Berlyn Savella confirmed police responded to Shell gas station in Dededo at around 8 p.m., where a man reportedly was shooting projectiles from a sling shot at employees. Police tried to stop the man before at least one officer opened fire. The man was shot, then transported to Guam Regional Medical City, where he was pronounced dead. Ms. Savella went on record with a statement, which you may view below:

[THE FOLLOWING IS THE OLDER VERSION OF THIS STORY:]

Guam Police Department officers and the Independent Investigative Team are at Shell gas station in Dededo, where sources report gunshot was heard.

GPD spokeswoman Berlyn Savella, who is on site, was able to confirm there is suspicion of gunshots fired at the station, but cannot confirm any other details.

Sources tell Kandit police responded to the gas station, where a man was trying to hurt employees and customers after driving dangerously through the main gassing platform and weaving close to the gas pumps at high speeds. Police tried to stop the assailant, but the situation escalated, sources say.

The possible involvement of the Independent Investigative Team suggests at least one police officer may have fired his or her gun to stop the assailant. The IIT was created by Attorney General Leevin Camacho in 2021 following public outcry on cases of officer-involved shooting.

“We would like to inform the public of an incident at the Dededo Shell Station this evening involving an unknown man and the Guam Police Department,” a statement from Shell’s corporate office states. “Our current efforts are directed at working with authorities to secure the scene for further investigation. The safety of our team and customers is our top priority. As of right now, the Dededo Shell Station is closed for business. We will update our customers when we resume operations. Please stay safe everyone.”

No other information is available at this time (10 p.m., ChST, March 9, 2022).

  • Sounds like suicide by cop. Sounds totally justified to me. We need tougher ‘stand your ground’ laws so that protecting our homes and families is also justified — even if it means that somebody has to die.
