The Agana Cathedral turns 354 today, and the cassock of San Vitores to be displayed there

News release from the Archdiocese of Agana:

On the occasion of the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica’s parish festal Mass on Saturday, September 9th, and at all Sunday Masses on September 10th, the cassock of Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores will be displayed on the sanctuary for the very first time.

Blessed Diego erected the first Church on Guam and the Marianas, the Dulce Nombre de Maria Church, in 1669.

The faithful will celebrate the Feast of Dulce Nombre de Maria, the Sweet Name of Mary with a novena at 4:30 p.m. followed by Mass Saturday, Sept. 9. A procession will take place after the festal Mass followed by Na’taotao Tumano’.

As we celebrate our parish Patroness, we are reminded of Blessed Diego who gave us the name, Dulce Nombre de Maria. Join us in prayer as we celebrate 354 years of tradition in honoring the Sweet Name of Mary said Monsignor James Benavente, Pastor of the Agana Cathedral-Basilica.

It is only fitting that we celebrate Our Blessed Mother’s Nativity as the cathedral turns 354 years. I never phantom it to be that old.
It’s amazing to have Blessed Diego
    San Vitores’ cassock on display.
Our Lady of Camarin, pray for us. Amen
