Unemployment aid possible from May 28 – November 25, if Feds approve governor’s request

The Leon Guerrero-Tenorio Administration has submitted its funding request for $26.6 million to the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the administration and payment of the Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) program.

“We’re seeing quick response by our federal partners thanks to the actions we made days prior to Typhoon Mawar’s landfall. These actions provided for the deployment of FEMA staff before the storm and the Individual Assistance grants available today to our residents who experienced damages to their homes,” said Governor Leon Guerrero. “As we work to restore our community, it is clear not everyone can return to work and why we are aggressively pushing for this additional financial assistance to support our affected families.”

“Recovery will look different for us all, and for many, Typhoon Mawar resulted in lost hours and wages,” said Lt. Governor Joshua Tenorio. “Under the leadership of Department of Labor’s David Dell’Isola and the pathways established through the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Program, we are confident in our ability to execute this additional support to our people. Now that our request has been submitted, we look forward to a favorable response within a few short weeks. Similar to documenting damages to your homes and property, we encourage individuals to document any losses in employment or wages as a direct result of Typhoon Mawar.”

Once approved, DUA benefits will be retroactive to the week beginning Sunday, May 28, 2023, and can be paid up to the week ending November 25, 2023, if the individual remains eligible for DUA. The computed weekly assistance amount for the territory of Guam is $384 as determined by USDOL.

Individuals who are registered on hireguam.com should take steps to ensure their accounts are active. If you are unable to log on or reset your password, e-mail [email protected] for assistance. If you think you will be applying for DUA benefits as a direct result of Typhoon Mawar and do not have an account, register today at hireguam.com. Nothing in life is completely free, it always comes with a price or a cost. There are no shortcuts to solutions, opportunities, and challenges in life. I just hope that whomever applies for this assistance does not attempt to cheat the government. As these are federal dollars and that’s my opinion.
