Yigo mayor delivers on refurbished gymnasium

Yigo’s public gymnasium is back open and better than ever thanks to funding the village’s mayor – Tony Sanchez – sought and budgeted toward long awaited repairs and renovations.

The gym suffered major damage during Typhoon Mawar and has been closed until this past Saturday, when the mayor and children and adult basketball and volleyball players gathered with dignitaries to cut the ribbon signifying its reopening. Mr. Sanchez applied for and received a $600,000 local grant, which he used to contract a developer to make the repairs, according to director of parks and recreation Angel Sablan.

The gym was in need of renovation prior to sustaining typhoon damage. According to Mr. Sablan, the administration had allocated about $100,000 for those renovations from the annual capital improvement grants Guam receives from the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Mr. Sanchez said he is particularly excited to welcome the village’s youth to play in the gym and to coordinate and host basketball and volleyball tournaments for the youth, adults, and senior citizens.
