Southern High student’s editorial to Kandit should make elected and education officials ashamed of themselves

The Guam Education Board meets Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at its conference room in the multimillion-dollar Department of Education central office in Tiyan.

The following editorial was submitted to Kandit by a student of Southern High School. The student asked that his/her name not be published so that he/she would not be called into the principal’s office. That fear alone speaks to the abhorrent conditions of public schools that need to and must change.

On a side note, this student has excellent writing skill.

By a Southern High School student

I hope this letter finds you in good health. I am writing to express my concerns regarding the state of the facilities at Southern high school As a senior student, I believe it is crucial to address issues that affect the overall learning environment and well-being of the students.

Over the past years I have noticed several areas where our school facilities are not up to the standards they should be. For instance, the condition of the restrooms is often poor, with broken fixtures and an overall lack of cleanliness. Additionally, the classrooms are showing signs of wear and tear, such as chipped paint, damaged desks, and outdated technology.

These conditions are not only a hindrance to effective learning but also pose potential health and safety risks to students and staff. A conducive learning environment is essential for academic success and the overall development of students.

I kindly request that the school administration takes prompt action to address these concerns. It would greatly benefit the students and staff if maintenance and improvements are made to enhance the facilities. This could include regular cleaning schedules, repairing or replacing damaged equipment, and updating classroom resources.

I understand that budgetary constraints might be a factor, but I believe that investing in the facilities will have a positive impact on the morale and performance of both students and teachers. A well-maintained and safe environment reflects the school’s commitment to excellence in education.

I look forward to hearing from you.
