The post office needs to improve its service

By Disgruntled GMF Subscriber

The GMF post office does nothing to move the lines quickly. When you have a package that you are picking up from a loved one, receiving a package to give a loved one, or picking up a package of medication, expect to stay at the post office for at least an hour to STAND IN LINE, at any hour of the day. It’s ridiculous how people of all ages, persons with disabilities, parents with small children, and veterans are expected to wait and stand longer for their packages.

Sure their hours have extended, however the service has not. It’s the same one open counter, with one staff member, serving almost 6,000 people…almost 800 per day. It’s ridiculous and unfair to paying customers. Honestly, the Ross stores checkout lines move faster than this!!

The postmaster, Tammy Schoenen, doesn’t care. Schoenen has no urgency or motivation to move lines swiftly and efficiently. And it’s sad how the beloved people of Guam have to endure this hardship because they are simply at the mercy of USPS to deliver their mail because home delivery options are very limited on island. In addition, they raised up the box rate to $220 annually. So where is the money really going?

I’m tired of just accepting bad service at GMF. I pay my dues with my hard earned money and the least they can do is staff accordingly during peak times.

I hope that your team can do a bit more to investigate the GMF facility and make it a headline story that will shed some light on the embarrassment of this establishment and the shameful mess of Tammy Schoenen.

To make the island better, we need to speak up more and not just settle for less.

  • I strongly agree with this complainant. I have long felt the USPS treats its Guam customers shamefully. I ALWAYS talk to other customers during my long waits in line at the Barrigada Post Office and encourage them to complete the survey offered on the receipt they get when they purchase anything at the USPS. I certainly do. It might not help with my one voice but, if others would do likewise, it “might” help.

The number of hours customers waste standing in long lines that move ever so slowly is astounding when totaled up. I spent ONE HOUR and FORTY-FIVE minutes to mail one package two days ago. Everyone in line with me spent a like number of hours.

Package pickup lines are even longer and slower. The postal employees take one customer’s yellow card(s) at a time and then make a trip to the back to get that person’s package(s). I used to live on Saipan. There, the postal employees would take 5, 6, 7 yellow cards from that many customers and make ONE trip back to get all their packages. Once, after standing in line almost TWO hours, I had to abandon my place and go home to use the bathroom. It is shameful that this Federal USPS building does not offer a public restroom, at least open during regular working hours.

Once, I needed to get a few stamps and had to stand in a long, every creeping line to go inside to buy stamps. Why is there no stamp machine in the open lobby. Those could be taken inside during off hours to prevent vandalism or theft.

Why in the world can’t the USPS here open at 8 a.m. rather than 9 as they do now???

Why in the world can’t the USPS keep enough employees manning the package pickup window??? There is space for 3 employees at the Barrigada Branch.

There is ABSOLUTELY AND POSITIVELY not enough use of the package lockers. Every time I go to the post office, I count the great number of lockers with keys dangling in them, indicating they are not in use. It is, again, shameful, that greater use of these lockers is not carried out, thereby saving the customers countless hours of standing in long lines and easing the workload of postal employees at the pickup window.

There is no attempt by USPS staff to provide information to customers as to services available, such as free boxes for those not getting home delivery. Posting such information in the lobby would be nice.

How about some accommodation for the elderly, veterans, etc.??

I read that all USPS rates will, AGAIN, be going up come January 2024. As recently as 10 years ago, No one on Saipan had to pay for their USPS box. Maybe that has changed by now (I don’t know). Why do Guam customers pay such astronomical fees for their P.O. Boxes???

All said, the postal staff at the Barrigada USPS couldn’t be more nice and helpful. Surely, some improvements are beyond their ability and rest with management.

I encourage everyone to strongly and frequently speak out for better service.

  • is the post office federal jobs? This is not handled locally on guam, ask washington for more empleyees.
